Vintage bronze Shiva Nataraj statue from Gujarat, India.
Cast from solid bronze, with a green patina, this statue dates to early to mid 20th century (or earlier). Lord Shiva dances within a double cosmic wheel and shows fine detail typical of pieces from this part of India. Note a small break in the agni (fire) that he carries in his upper left hand, as shown in the picture, commensurate with a piece of this age.
Lord Shiva in Natraj form (King of the Dance) teaches us not to be afraid of change. He dances within the cosmic wheel which represents the universe, touching it to show his mastery over it, and he tramples the dwarf of ignorance. His right hand displays the mudra of fearlessness/protection, while his left hand and foot performs a sweeping motion, encouraging you to join him in the dance and signifying refuge and liberation for those who surrender to him.
